Account Settings: Linked Accounts

Connect your own third-party service accounts to Ubidots and use them instead of the platform defaults.

Written by Alejandro Mora Chica

By default, Ubidots uses its own accounts with third-party services — such as Twilio for SMS and voice alerts — to deliver notifications on your behalf. Linked Accounts lets you replace those defaults with your own credentials, giving you more control over delivery, branding, billing, and usage limits.

This is useful when you:

  • Already have a Twilio account and want SMS/voice alerts to come from your own phone numbers.

  • Need to manage your own messaging quotas and billing independently of Ubidots.

  • Want full visibility into delivery logs and usage within your own third-party dashboards.

More services will be available to link in the future.

Requirements

  • Industrial or Enterprise plan.

1. Accessing Linked Accounts

Go to your Account Settings → Linked Accounts.

2. Twilio (SMS & Voice)

Linking your Twilio account allows Ubidots to send SMS and voice alert notifications through your own Twilio numbers instead of the Ubidots default.

2.1. What you'll need

Before linking, make sure you have the following from your Twilio account:

  • Account SID: Found on the Twilio Console dashboard.

  • API Key SID and API Key Secret: Generated under Account → API Keys & Tokens in the Twilio Console.

Note: Be sure to copy your API Key Secret right away, as Twilio won't show it to you a second time. Also, keep in mind that the key type must be 'Main' or 'Standard'. Using a 'Restricted' key usually prevents a successful connection and won't allow you to authenticate properly.

  • From Number: The Twilio phone number that will appear as the sender on SMS and voice notifications.

  • Country Codes (optional): If you want to restrict which destination countries this Twilio account handles, enter the relevant country codes (e.g. +1, +57). Leave blank to use this account for all destinations.

2.2. Link your Twilio account

  1. Go to your account settings → Linked Accounts.

  2. Click Connect on the Twilio tile.

  3. Fill in the form:

    • Account SID

    • API Key SID

    • API Key Secret

    • From Number

    • Country Codes (optional)

  4. Click Connect Twilio

Once saved, Ubidots will use your Twilio account to dispatch SMS and voice notifications for Events that have those action types configured.

2.3. Disconnect your Twilio account

  1. Go to your account settings → Linked Accounts.

  2. Click Disconnect on the Twilio tile.

  3. Confirm the action.

After disconnecting, Ubidots will fall back to its default Twilio service for SMS and voice notifications.

Note: Disconnecting does not affect your Twilio account itself — it only removes the link within Ubidots.
