Devices often play roles in multiple areas of your operations, and navigating through all the relevant information can be a challenge. The Layers feature simplifies this by allowing you to organize different pages into tabs, or "layers" within any device. Each layer can hold a variety of content, from other Ubidots pages to external third-party resources.

With Layers, everything you need is accessible in one device. This makes it easier to monitor the device’s performance, analyze its impact on operations, or link to helpful external tools. By bundling related information together, Layers streamline your workflow and keep your most important resources at your fingertips.

Requirements

1. How Do Layers Work in a Device Page?

Layers can be thought of as the tabs of a web browser, where one of your devices serves as the browser and each layer you create within it is a tab that contains other pages. These layers can contain Ubidots pages (a dashboard or a custom page, for example) or external pages.

Once your layers are created, you can navigate through them from the same device by clicking on any tab.

Important note: some external pages can't be embedded. This has nothing to do with Ubidots nor with the Layers feature, but with a restriction configured in those specific pages—this is the case of Google, for example.

2. Creating Device Layers

To create layers in a device, follow these steps:

  1. Go to any device or create a new one.

  2. Once in the device, click on the cogwheel button in the “layers” field.

  3. Once in the layers menu, you can add new ones by using the “+ add layer” button.

  4. Configure each layer using the following options:

    1. Name: the name of the layer. It will be displayed in the tab.

    2. URL: paste the URL of the page to be contained in the layer here.

  5. Use the options at the layer’s header to:

    1. Hide/show the layer.

    2. Delete the layer.

    3. Hide/show the layer’s configuration options.

Note: A maximum of 10 layers can be created in each device.
